The Center was established in 1975 to execute and coordinate research on alcoholic beverage, substance with abuse liability and related problem.

 

In recognition of the research output of the center the World Health Organization in 1980.

 

Designated the Center as the WHO Collaborating Center for Research and Training in Drug Dependence.

 

The status was maintained by the WHO redesignation until the present.
